I think (well I hope) that Spring is officially here! Warmer weather, blooming flowers, rain shower, and pests. That’s right, PESTS, those unwelcome houseguests are making their way out of hiding, and into our homes. Here is a quick list of things to do to prepare your home and keep the creepy critters out of your happy dwellings.
- Look for Signs of Damage: With the weather getting warmer, now is a great time to really examine the exterior of your structures for damage or infestation. In or outside your home, look for mud tubes and damaged wood. It’s commonly said here in North Carolina that there are two types of homes: those that are infested with termites; and those that will be. Be proactive, reach out to a pest professional, and schedule an annual home termite inspection. It could save your hard earned savings, and possibly your home.
- Clear Wood Piles: Wood can host a number of pests and insects, that would love to check into your home. Move your wood pile away from the structure of your home, to discourage infestation. This is also a great time to trim back your bushes from the house, as well, making it more difficult for critters to make it into your home.
- Repair Your Home: While looking for signs of damage from the winter, make sure you take a close look at the exterior of your home. Caulk any holes or cracks in and outside the home, before the pests and insects find them! Also, be sure to repair or replace window and door screens, to keep out the insects, especially the blood-sucking variety!
- Mosquito Treatment: Speaking of every southerner’s most despised flyer, the sooner we get these tips done, the longer we can hold them off. Eliminate standing water on the ground or on play equipment. Be sure to clean bird baths regularly. And, if need be, contact a professional for a mosquito treatment for your property.
- Be Aware of Pollinators: Everyone loves to see busy little bumblebees hard at work, spreading spring magic all around. What we do not like to see, is their nasty cousin’s, hornets and wasps!! Make sure that you are targeting the bad guys, while letting the harmless bees do their job, for all our sakes. Always check to make sure you are buying the correct pesticide for the proper invaders.
- Clean The House: Along with your regular spring cleaning tasks, make sure to prevent ants and other kitchen pests from wandering into your home. Wipe down the counters nightly, clear uncovered food and store food in airtight containers.
There is nowhere I would rather be, than in North Carolina in the Spring! Once you have tackled these simple steps to prevent the pests and insects from wrecking havoc on your home, you can sit back with the family, and enjoy the changing season! Happy Homes, Y'all!
